President John Magufuli of the United Republic of Tanzania has begun a 3-day state visit to Uganda at the invitation of his host President Yoweri Museveni.

Mr. Museveni and the First Lady Hon. Janet Museveni received President Magufuli and his wife, Janet Magufuli at Mutukula border in Kyotera district.

At the formal welcome ceremonies, the Tanzania President was accorded full state honors including a 21-gun salute and inspected a guard of honor mounted by Officers and men of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

Thereafter, the two leaders commissioned the Mutukula One Border Post. Mutukula is one of the strategic borders that facilitate trade between neighbouring Uganda and Tanzania and other East African countries.

Mutukula one border post is the forth border post to be commissioned. The other one border posts include Mirama Hills – Kagitumba, Busia- Uganda – Busia Kenya and Malaba Uganda –Malaba Kenya border posts. Construction of the Katuna- Gatuna and the Nimule border post are still on going.

Visiting President Magufuli said that his government was committed to working with the Government of Uganda and other East African countries on development projects. He urged Tanzanians and Ugandans to embrace the development projects between both countries citing that they would create employment opportunities for the wanainchi.

President Museveni thanked the British government for its support towards development projects in East Africa. He called upon the public to work hard and create wealth in their homes.

President Museveni said that four sectors – ICT, industries, commercialized production and services - can help people create wealth.

“Public services is not a sector of wealth creation but services of the state. Public service offers jobs but for a few people. Everyone cannot work for government,” he said.

He thanked Tanzanians for liberating Uganda from Idi Amin in 1979.

The two leaders later attended a ground-breaking ceremony of the oil pipeline at Luziga village in Mutukula Town Council. The pipeline will, on completion, transport Uganda’s oil from Bunyoro Sub-Region to Tanzania’s Indian Ocean Port town of Tanga.
