Press Statement on the 5th Annual EAC Health and Scientific Conference and International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair

I welcome you all to this press briefing convened to brief the general public on the upcoming 5th Annual EAC Health and Scientific Conference and International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair. The regional Health and Scientific Conference and International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair is being organized by the East African Community Secretariat in collaboration with Development Partners and will take place from 25th to 27th March 2015 at the Serena Kampala Hotel.
I take this opportunity to introduce Hon. Jesca Eriyo, the Deputy Secretary General of the East African Community In charge of the Productive and Social Sectors who is already here in Kampala to oversee the preparations for the Conference and Exhibition.

The three-day conference is to be held under the theme; Investing in Health through strengthening regional health systems and institutions towards the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
The Conference is intended to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary discussions to inform health sector policy and investments in the region so that our health systems are strong enough to effectively respond to threats of emerging and re-emerging communicable disease, non-communicable diseases, and other conditions of public health importance.
The conference will focus on four sub themes namely;
i.    Health Systems Strengthening
ii.    Integrated Approaches for Disease Prevention, Control and Management
iii.    Social Determinants of Health and;
iv.    Diseases Conditions of Public Health Importance

The following four Symposia will also be held as part of the Conference:
i.    The 2nd EAC Health Ministers and Parliamentarians Forum on Health and Symposium on Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health;
ii.    HIV and AIDS Symposium
iii.    Symposium on Promoting Access to Safe, Efficacious and Quality Medicines, Medical Devices, Health Products and Technologies in the EAC and;
iv.    The 2nd East African Epidemiological Symposium with a focus on “one health” approaches.

The Conference will also host a Health Exhibition and Trade Fair where health related products and services will be on display with a view of establishing business linkages between exhibitors and potential consumers in a one-stop-shop event.
The conference will document progress made by the East African Community Partner States towards the attainment of health related Millennium Development Goals; facilitate sharing and documenting of best practices and innovations in health sector investments, heath systems strengthening, prevention and control of the threats of emerging and re-emerging communicable and non - communicable disease and health promotion.
It is also expected to renew commitment of leaders and stakeholders towards enhancing health sector investments, strengthening of health systems and the attainment of Universal Health Coverage in the EAC.
The Conference is expected to bring together between 800 and 1000 leading health and development sector players from within the East African Community and beyond.
The East African Community (EAC) is the regional intergovernmental organisation of the Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
Uganda is privileged to host this Conference and the Exhibition as a Partner State that is committed the regional integration agenda.
