Uganda up Tourism Promotions at Magical Kenya Expo 2016

13 October 2016

Uganda has taken destination promotion and marketing to the next level at East Africa’s largest travel expo, Magical Kenya Tourism Expo 2016 that is running in Nairobi, Kenya. Last year Uganda went away with best exhibitor award in a new show of marketing verve.
Uganda Tourism Board has partnered with Uganda tourism businesses and the Uganda High Commission in Kenya to ensure a strong showing at the expo. The Uganda delegation was led by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu.
Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E. Mrs. Angelina Wapakhabulo is leading Uganda’s marketing team from the Nairobi mission.
Unlike previous expos, this year’s expo started off with high level talks between the northern corridor partner countries of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Since 2014, the three countries have been jointly marketing themselves as the East Africa destination. Uganda’s Prof. Kamuntu says the joint marketing has caused rethinking tourism business in the region.
“I travelled with my agencies heads and technical people because we are changing the way we do business in tourism both at the private and public level,” Kamuntu has said. He added that Uganda businesses and public organisations must work to see how to promote Uganda and complementeach other’s efforts in the destination marketing.

The JTMC meeting was hosted by Kenya tourism Cabinet Secretary Hon. Najib Balalaat the upmarket Lake Elementaita Serena Luxury Camp.

Speaking at the expo, Stephen Asiimwe, the UTB Chief Executive Officer, re-echoed Kamuntu call to the tourism sector, adding that UTB has gone beyond the Uganda borders to promote and facilitated regional travel.

“We are having engagements and destination training with travel and tour operators from Kenya,” Asiimwe said. “You cannot market a destination you don’t understand or know about. Destination training and awareness is the answer.”

UTB will present and engage businesses at the opening of Uganda’s Mombasa Commercial Consulate. This consulate is one new cog in Uganda’s commercial diplomacy drive.

Beyond Magical Kenya Expo 2016, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda will be promoting themselves as one destination at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London early November 2016. Event management at such international platforms is managed on a rotational basis, with Kenya this year.

Travellers can apply for the Uganda visa online at and pay for the visa at USD50.
