Uganda, Netherlands to cooperate in High-tech Agro Production

DAVOS, SWITZERLAND: President Yoweri Museveni has called on the Netherlands government to support Uganda scientists in the areas of agri-technologies especially in beef and milk to boost production.

“The Netherlands has high technology in animal production and agriculture. We want to send our scientists to learn these technologies in support of agriculture,” he said.

The President was yesterday speaking during a meeting he held with Mrs. Sigrid Kaag, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The President and the Minister also discussed the security situation in the region. The President said the conflicts in the region and Africa especially in South Sudan, Somalia, DR. Congo, CAR etc where initially either because of a vacuum or lack of organized power locally, no national armies or organized political parties.

“Factions fighting is not a vacuum, the issues in South Sudan and Burundi is to work towards stopping the fighting and push for negotiations like what happened in Kenya. Agreements have a chance of succeeding. The worst case scenario is where there is a vacuum – no army, no national political party, etc, a situation that allows foreign interference,” he said.

The President said the situation in the region is improving and that stakeholders continue to talk.

Mrs. Sigrid Kaag said her country was grateful to President Yoweri Museveni for his role in calming conflicts in Somalia, South Sudan and the DRC. She commended Uganda for hosting refugees from conflict regions despite the pressure from the host communities.

Minister Kaag said her country is ready to support Uganda in the areas of agriculture development, trade and technology transfer. She also said they are willing to introduce Uganda to Dutch companies who can share knowledge and are willing to invest in areas of irrigation, high tech agriculture and training at their universities in the Netherlands.
